Myths vs. Facts

Myth:

People cheat in relationships because the other partner isn’t satisfying them in the bedroom.

Fact:

If only there was one simple answer to that question! As a therapist, I find that most monogamous (and there are plenty of people who do not believe in monogamy) people cheat for several reasons, however, these have been the biggest reasons I’ve seen in my 14 years of practice. 1. The person who cheats feels like he/she is not having their needs met (these can be emotional needs, physical needs, or financial needs). Now, this doesn’t mean that anyone in a committed relationship has the right to cheat if that happens, but instead signals a larger breakdown in the relationship (communication, individual depression or other emotional issues, life getting in the way) and is a very loud alert that something is wrong. 2. The person has already checked out of the relationship and is perhaps acting out in order to get out of the relationship.

Cheating can also sometimes be a cultural norm, and therefore can be a behavior modeled for that person growing up. The best preventative measures for this phenomenon in a relationship is to pay attention to it! Our relationships need to grow, change, and evolve, just as we do as individuals. When we can communicate effectively with our partner, then we have a better chance of catching problems as they come up instead of reactively dealing with the consequences of this act.

Anxiety Management Support Group for Mandeville and Covington Starting Jan 30 2016

We are offering an 8-week group for residents in the Mandeville and Covington areas to help you learn about anxiety, its causes, and how to handle it effectively so you can live more happily. You will have the opportunity to talk about your experience with anxiety and get helpful feedback from group members. You will leave the group with a new skill set for managing anxiety.

Anxiety Management Psychoeducational and Support Group

Description of Group

This 8-week, closed, educational and support group will focus on the various aspects of anxiety and how one can begin to break down the symptoms and causes of this state of being. Simultaneously, the group will help the participants build a repertoire of skills to empower the individual and practice control.

Ideal candidates for this group are adults who are experiencing disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder. This group may also be a fit for individuals experiencing physical ailments due to stress and anxiety such as insomnia, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, pain, and high blood pressure. The group is facilitated by Holly Perry, Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).

Registration and Cost

Availability is limited. The cost of the group is $360 for 8 weeks (that’s $45 per 90 minute session). A worthwhile investment, as individual therapy can cost upwards of $80/hour for one 60 minute session. Although discounted rates are not available, participants may choose to utilize an installment plan with a valid credit card. Payment for the group as well as an installment plan agreement (if applicable) must be made prior to the start of the group. A 30 minute, $35 individual pre-screen session will be scheduled upon calling 985-624-2942 in order to gather intake information as well as to arrange payment for group.

Group Topic Schedule

Week 1

This group will focus on defining anxiety, and will include a discussion regarding group rules, expectations, and introductions.

Week 2

This group will explore the cognitive component of anxiety. Participants will learn how their own thoughts can begin the cycle of anxiousness and will begin to learn the process of hearing and responding differently to those thoughts.

Week 3

This session will center on processing the physiological components of anxiety and various coping mechanisms for dealing with such ailments.

Week 4

During this group, participants will learn and discuss the various behavioral components of anxiety and how it manifests for each participant. Techniques for creating awareness and change will be discussed and learned.

Week 5

This session will focus on the associated problems stemming from anxiety. Participants will learn and share experiences both mental and physical that are caused by anxiety.

Week 6

Effective treatment strategies will be the focus of week 6. Participants will be able to process and discuss various techniques for working through and minimizing the effects of anxiety in their lives.
Week 7

The focus of this session will be to process the activities, progress and phenomenological impact of the group on participants’ lives.

Week 8

This last group will focus on summarizing and reinforcing the lessons, pains, progress and triumphs made in the group. Members will leave the group feeling more knowledgeable and better equipped to deal with their every day experiences of anxiety.

Adolescent Substance Use Progression Prevention Group Starting September 2015

AdolescentV2What is the Adolescent Substance Use Progress Prevention Group?

This group will focus on preventing dependence and supporting adolescents (aged 13-17) who have experience using alcohol or other substances and/or who are at risk of becoming dependent. Mike McShan, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC) developed this curriculum and will facilitate the seminar. All sessions except the intake session are 90 minutes in duration. All participants will be required to abstain from any form of substance use for the duration of the seminar. All participants must allow weekly drug screening by parents. The cost of the seminar is $500. Payment must be made in full prior to the beginning of the group or arrangements can be made for a payment plan.

Intake Session
All participants and a parent are required to attend a 30 minute intake session with Mr. McShan wherein the client will be given a short assessment (the SASSI-A2) and questionnaire to determine the scope and depth of their substance use issues. Parent(s) can complete intake paperwork at this time. This session will be scheduled one week before the start date of the group.

Drug Screening
The parents of all participants will be given UDS kits at the intake session to test their child on a weekly basis. The cost of these kits are included in the total cost of the seminar. Mr. McShan will instruct the parents on the proper usage of the kits and will discuss a plan of action should one come up positive.

Week 1
Introduction: In this session, participants will engage in activities and discussions geared towards getting to know the other members of the group. A discussion about the rules of the group as well as a collaborative discussion about the expectations that group members will have of each other will take place in this session. Other activities and discussions will center on individual histories.

Week 2
Substance Use and the Brain: This session will focus on educating and discussing the concept of addiction and how it affects the brain. Participants will learn specifically about the effects of alcohol, Cannabis, and synthetic forms (Spice, K2, etc.) of Cannabis as well. Activities and discussions will follow.

Week 3
Marijuana: A Gateway Drug: This group will focus on defining and discussing the concept of marijuana as a gateway drug. In this group, participants will learn the results of their intake assessment and their level of risk in developing a substance use disorder. Activities to trace patterns of substance use in family history will be utilized as well.

Week 4
“The Truth About Drugs” Video: Participants will watch and discuss this informative and thought provoking video.

Week 5
Goals and Aspirations: This group will center on a discussion about how continued substance use can negatively impact future. Criminal consequences and the real-life cost of use will be emphasized.

Week 6
Peer Influence: During this session, participants will discuss specific and tangible refusal skills to work through peer pressures without feeling ostracized. Activities and discussions regarding how to enhance one’s social network and recreational interests will also take place.

Week 7
Life Coping Skills: As the seminar starts to wind down, more practical discussions like how to work through difficult emotions will be discussed. Topics such as anger management, effective communication, problem solving will all be addressed. Also addressed will be issues related to depression, anxiety, and improving self-esteem.

Week 8
Family Relapse Prevention Plan: This group will focus on how all members of the family can be involved in providing a sober and stable environment.

Alphabet soup: What do all of those letters mean behind my therapist’s name?

First, what is the difference between a license and a certificate?

A license is generally determined by a state regulated board to ensure the public that a person is qualified to do their field of work. The idea is to protect the public with requirements, qualifications, application process and a code of ethics.  A certificate is to safeguard that the holder is up to date with best practices in the profession and to unite the field though standards of those in the counseling profession.

Here is a list of some common acronyms in the helping field (some vary by state): 

LPC – Licensed Professional Counselor
A Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Louisiana this counselor has met state requirements allowing them to legally be recognized as a counselor including a Master’s degree and 3000 hours of supervision.

NCC- National Certified Counselor
A National Certified Counselor (NCC) has completed educational requirements set by the National Board for Certified Counselors and passed a standardized test for Counselors.

CI- Counselor Intern
A Counselor Intern (CI) has a Master’s degree and is under supervision of a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor as they work towards meeting the Louisiana State licensure hour requirements for a Licensed Professional Counselor.

LMFT- Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
A Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) has a Master’s degree specifically geared toward marriage and family and has significant experience working with this population.

LAC- Licensed Addiction Counselor
A Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC) has earned a masters degree and has completed 2000 hours of supervision.

CAC- Certified Addiction Counselor
A Certified Addiction Counselor  (CAC) has earned a bachelors degree and has completed 4000 hours of supervision.

RAC- Registered Addiction Counselor
A Registered Addiction Counselor (RAC) has a high school diploma and has completed 6000 hours of supervision.

CIT- Counselor in Training
A Counselor in Training (CIT) is actively pursuing a career as a Certified Addiction Counselor, Licensed Addiction Counselor or Registered Addiction Counselor.

LPC-S- Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor
A Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S) is able to supervise counselor interns as they work towards licensure.

CRC- Certified Rehabilitation Counselor
A Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) has earned a Master’s degree and serves people with disabilities.

How is Your Uniqueness a Strength?

According to Gallup Research everyone has talent and some people have cultivated their talents into their STRENGTHS. People who use their strengths are happier and more satisfied with their life at work and at home.

How can you find out about YOUR strengths?

At Gallup’s website you can take a test. It’s only $9.99 and it will send you information immediately upon completing the test.

This test was based on research that encompassed over three million people. When you are done you will get your top 5 strengths and descriptions along with some additional information. There are 34 strengths, but only 1 in 33.3 million people will have the same exact five strengths in their top five.

The advantage of learning about your strengths is that it often confirms what we are good at and love to do. Many people are pushed to work on their weaknesses and end up feeling drained and unhappy. When you cultivate your talents you feel energized and in the zone! That place where time is lost and you feel completely absorbed.

If you haven’t been in the “zone” for a while, or never, don’t worry!

Talents may be dormant but they never go away. You just have to decide to use them!

Why should you learn more about your STRENGTHS?
1. It will help you rediscover or confirm your talents.
2. You will be more confident about communicating your strengths to others because you value your own uniqueness.
3. A greater appreciation for your own talents will help you recognize what is special about others.
