Vivek “Vik” Kannan is a first generation American born to Indian immigrants. His parents instilled in him values of caring, consideration and open-mindedness towards all people. He grew up in California and moved to New Orleans 3 weeks before Katrina hit the city. There, he received his Master’s degree in Counseling at Loyola University. Vik’s approach to counseling in much like his love for the people, culture and energy of New Orleans. He is a passionate mental health professional who hopes to have a positive and lasting influence on everyone he counsels.

Vik specializes in treating children ages of 3 to 11 using, primarily, play therapy and art therapy. The benefits of these therapies are immeasurable and have been clinically proven to effectively treat a wide array of conditions and helps to facilitate a way for children to express emotions and feelings which they have not learned to understand or verbalize yet. Vik has also pursued specialization in grief and anxiety. His internship began at Seasons Grief Center, under the renowned grief specialist Jan Keyhoe. Her mentoring made him realize that a counselor must be genuine in their empathy and that the grief process is complex and having different processes for each individual is essential in helping in the healing process of grieving. He is also a proud member and lecturer of the American Play Therapy Association. Vik began his career at Kingsley House where he was the primary counselor for 3 to 11 year old children and the crisis counselor at many local high schools. During his time there, he enjoyed a diverse clientele; from pre-k children with developmental difficulties, to pre- teens with ADHD, to teens suffering from depression, suicidal ideation and cyber bullying. He has also worked with couples in the realms of pre-marital counseling, divorce, and grief counseling due to the loss of a partner.

He is excited to join the staff of Northshore Counseling and Wellness and feels the practice represents his mantra: to utilize individualistic, multi-disciplinary and differentiated approaches to help his community achieve true wellness.
